Welcome Back!

During the holiday break, Mrs. Forsong found out she is having a GIRL!

We reviewed science expectations:
We also wrote down our new year's resolution for math and science!
In math we are continuing to work on decimals and fractions.

In science we learned what a mixture and a solution was.
When we mixed these three items, we had a mixture.
A solution is a mixture of substances that are blended so completely that the mixture looks the same everywhere while a mixture is a physical combination of two or more substances that are blended together without forming new substances.

Good Morning Rogers and Class Party

The Rogers Ringers played wonderful music!
Some of the teachers were called up to sing the 12 days of Christmas! Even Dr. Reedy sang!

 The Rogers Choir
Lauren's artwork was picked to show in front of the whole school!
Jake and Kate were the number one "clippers" of 4th grade!
 We also had a sing-a-long.
 Party time!

Gingberbread Houses

We got together with our book buddies to make gingerbread houses!

Then we came back to our class and made our own!

In science we are learning about nutrition (hard to tell by our gingerbread houses!). We picked an entire day's meal off McDonald's menu. Then we looked at the calories in each and learned that we should only be eating 1,600-2,000 calories per day, a lot less that what we have at McDonald's!

For our project, we are acting as advertising for McDonald's. It is up to us to come up with 4 healthy menu items to add to their menu. We have to make it sound delicious and a better choice for the customers!

Jingle Bells!

This week in science we are learning about nutrition! We each got a picture of an item from the food pyramid. We worked together to put it where it belonged. Then we labeled and learned the serving size for each!

Today we got to go caroling around the neighborhood!
We found Alex, our friend who has been in the hospital for many months battling cancer. We were so excited to see him and be able to spread some cheer to his house! We miss you Alex and hope you feel better soon!

In math we are learning about how to use decimals to measure distance. We thought of it as money using pennies. Once we got to 100 pennies, we know we can change it to 1 whole.

Number Lines

In science we have been observing changes caused by heating and cooling. We did an experiment with cooling! We watched and documented the changes in temperature in a cup that had no ice and a cup filled with ice. We know that as the atoms in the cup with ice begin to lose their energy, their temperature will also drop!
We wrote a story about a water molecule! This was our prompt:

Write a short story from the perspective of a water molecule as it goes through a change in state. The story must describe what state they are starting in, what state they end up in, and if there was a addition or reduction in heat to cause their change.
In math we have been learning about number lines and where to put fractions on a number line.

Decimals and Fractions

In science we have been working with changes caused by heating and cooling.
We know that the hotter an object gets, the more energy the atoms have. The cooler an object gets, the less energy the atoms have!

We did an experiment today to see what would happen to a solid (Hershey Bar) if we heated it up. We made predictions and then watched as the atoms got more energy and turned into liquid!
In math we are working on converting fractions into decimals. We thought about it as money. 100 pennies = 1 dollar.
57/100 as a fraction
is like
0.57 as a decimal
("fifty-seven hundredths")
and converts to
$0.57 or 57¢ as money

We practiced shading in 100s charts and converting them to fractions and decimals!
